The Mini Coonhound is not a purebred dog; it is a hybrid, and unlike most other hybrids, there are more than 2 breeds used in creating the dog. The best way to determine the temperament of a mixed breed is to look up all known breeds in the cross and know you can get any combination of any of the characteristics found in any of the breeds. The Mini Coonhound was created by a breeder named Wallace Havens. The founder of this new type of dog states, "The Mini Coonhound is a new hybrid that looks like the old Black and Tan Coonhound people use to hunt coon with. The big difference is, these mature at 10-20 lbs and have no coonhound in them. We started out with the following breeds to develop this little hound, Short Haired Chihuahua, Italian Greyhound, Rat Terrier, Beagle, Min Pin. We breed them for the retired hunter that wants a dog around that reminds him of the old days. His wife may not want a big coonhound in the house so the mini coonhound is the perfect little look alike and is bred special for a family pet. People will love this little dog with the big ears. They make excellent little "tree dogs" and will be good with kids if trained correctly. No professional groomer required in their upkeep." The percentage of the breeds used in this mix is unknown and whether or not there were any other breeds used to create this type of dog is unknown. The Mini Coonhound is recognized by the American Canine Hybrid Club.
